Misty's Diary - Day 163 - Escape!

Finally my plans are coming to fruition.  After months of careful observation of the humans opening and closing our stall doors the plan for escape almost seems too obvious now.  I cursed myself for not thinking of it sooner.  Under the cover of darkness I will make my escape!

Although it is true that my captivity here has not been one of terrible burden and that my health and nutrition needs have been well attended to, it is nevertheless my duty to escape.  At first I did not think it even possible.  We are under almost constant observation from the humans.  Sometimes they are content to simply observe us, even taking pictures and giggling with delight at our captivity.  Other times they feed us special treats, most likely with the goal of keeping us fat and complacent.  The treats are diabolically irresistible - I, even I, cannot withstand their tasty goodness.  (Note: Attempt to discover the source of these treats so that I can take them with me when I make my escape.)

Our arrangements here are simple, but effective.  The perimeter fence is electrified wire, three strands.  Interior fences are two strands, also electrified wire.  The wire is kept electrified throughout the day.  I can tell you from experience that a touch of that wire will leave you shaken, not just stirred!  Cutting through it is not possible although wire cutters are available.  Curse our lack of thumbs, it is nature's constant joke at our expense.  We are flanked on one side by a large pond. (Note: Attempt to determine the depth of the pond, perhaps other horses have intel?)  Most likely it is not passable.  At night some of us are taken into the housing structure and secured behind barred gates until the next morning.  These "stalls" as the humans call them are primarily made of thick wood - too thick to chew through in a single evening.  The wood is well attached and dislodging it is proving difficult.  Also, inspired by the human film "The Great Escape" I did attempt digging, but would have to displace roughly 32 tons of earth to make a hole big enough for me to fit in, so that option is also off the table.

The key to escape is the gates, it seems.  Every evening, if we are chosen to be detained in the stalls, the humans secure the gate and latch it closed with a locking pin.  After months of attempting to watch the humans activate the locking mechanism my chance finally came!  I was able, just yesterday, to observe in close detail a human unlocking one of the gates.  The foolish human thought I was looking for a treat and jokes with her comrades about it.  Thankfully she did not suspect my true motive!

Once I was able to see in close detail how the mechanism worked I immediately began formulating a plan to get it open.  The humans leave some articles hanging about near our stalls, namely the head securing net and associated ropes.  With my new understanding I see that they have hung the keys to my prison right within my reach!  Their overconfidence and assumption of our stupidity will be their undoing!

Next time I am selected for overnight stalling I will use the ropes they leave within our reach to unhook the securing pin and lift the ring on my gate.  Unfortunately for my comrades, I don't think I will be able to open the gate from the front of it, so I will have to come back to free them once I connect with the Free Horse Resistance Movement (FHRM).  FHRM should be ably to supply enough horsepower and equipment to free the rest of the captives and hopefully loot the treat cache.  That celebration will be a night to remember!
