Last night I said farewell to another great horse. Lady was the first horse that I really rode on a regular basis. She was the one I learned the basic aspects of riding on, and the one that showed me how enjoyable riding can be. She was a special horse with a lot of history.
Lady was 37 years old when she died. A retired standard-bred cart racing horse and the mother of many other good horses she had a spirit that simply refused to quite. She had her last colt at age 32. I did not start riding her until she was about 33.
Even at 33 years old she was one of the fastest and most spirited horses I've ever ridden. Given the chance, Lady would have run until her heart burst. In fact, I don't think anything made her happier than to run. She was still very competitive and could not tolerate another horse running past her. Sway backed and probably stiff and sore, she would take off in a dead run without hesitation. She never quit and she never let up.
She died on the farm that has been her home for over thirty years. Mr. Spivey, our hearts go out to you. Lady was a family member for you as much as any human. She'll be missed, but never forgotten.
